Itinerary

Day 1Dehradun to Dharali/Gangotri | 250 km drive, 12-13 hours

  • Our Journey will start from Dehradun at 7:00 a.m. in the morning. Dehradun is well connected with Delhi and overnight buses and Volvo’s are available. 
  •  During the 280 km long Drive one will come across Various beautiful sites like maneri waterfalls and the change in terrain as you reach near Dharali/Gangotri is worth a site
  •  Reach Dharali/Gangotri by Evening. Check in at the Hotel followed by rest.
  •  A quick introduction with team and fellow travellers at Guest House/Hotel followed by the Dinner.

Day 2Dharali/Gangotri to Chirbasa | Trek Distance: 09 km | Trek Duration: 6 hours | Altitude: 10500 ft to 11630 ft

  • After an Early Breakfast the Team will head towards the Gangotri temple, Get a dip in the Bhagirathi river and go to the Mandir Darshan for seeking the Blessing for the Trek ( if time Permits )
  • Today’s trek is easy with a steep ascend when you start and a gradual ascend later
  • Reach camp site around lunch
  • Chirbasa campsite is very picturesque with view of the Bhagirathi peaks through dense pine treek 
  • Acclimatization walk in evening
  • Dinner at the Campsite.

Day 3Chirbasa to Bhojbasa | Trek Distance: 5.5 km | Trek Duration: 5-6 hours | Altitude: 11630 ft to 12415 ft

  • Breakfast at Chirbasa Camp site
  •  Start trek after breakfast
  •  Reach bhojbasa by lunch
  •  Spend time acclimitizing at Bhojbasa
  •  Dinner and Rest at camp Site.

Day 4Bhojbasa to Tapovan | Trek Distance: 06 km | Trek Duration: 8-9 hours | Altitude: 12415 ft to 14203 ft

  •  Today it is going to be a little strenuous, Trek to Gaumukh and witness the origin of one of the largest rivers of India
  •  Trek further up to Tapovan 
  •  Once can find peaks like Shivling and Bhagirathi at an arms distance from Tapovan
  • Overnight in Camps at Tapovan.

Day 5Rest Day Tapovan | Altitude: 14203 ft

  • Today it is time for trekkers to visit one of the most Picturesque landscape that one will come across in the Country
  • Witness some of the magnificient peaks of this region like Meru, Sumeri and Shivalinga.
  • One can visit the Meru glacier and return to the campsite
  • Overnight in Camps at Tapovan.

Day 6Tapovan to Bhojbasa | 6km trek, 5-6 Hours

  • Trek down 6 Kms from Tapovan to Bhojbasa
  •  Packed lunch for the day
  •  Rest at campsite at Bhojbasa

Day 7Bhojbasa to Gangotri/Dharali | 15.5 Km Trek , 7-8 hours

  • Trek down 14 Kms from Bhojbasa to Gangotri
  •  Packed lunch for the day
  •  Rest in Hotel.

Day 8Dharali/Gangotri to Dehradun | 280 Km Drive | 10-11 hours

  • After Breakfast, Check Out from Hotel
  • Drive to Dehradun
  • Arrival at Dehradun around 8:00 PM

The difficulty level of Gaumukh Tapovan Trek is moderate to difficult. Spread over 6 days the ascends are of moderate grading with few difficult patches escpecially the climb from Gaumukh glacier to Tapovan

  1. Physical fitness : You don’t have to be a fitness freak to do a trek it is just that basic fitness should be maintained. You should not be obese and should not have any medical ailments.
  2. Mental fitness : You should come with an open mindset and be ready for the harsh conditions winters have to offer.
  3. Gear : Being a Monsoon trek good gear is extremely essential.

Is Gaumukh Trek Safe?

Yes the trek is safe but needs guidance and assistance from an experienced team. There are certain sections which are risky. You may witness certain rockfall zones on the way. The best way to minimise these risks is taking assistance from an experienced team.

Can Gaumukh trek be done in one day?

You have to be very fit to attempt this, in a general opinion no. Most of the operators run this trek spread over a time of 7-8 days. The reason behind is proper acclimatization and minimizing the risks. 

What if we want to leave extra luggage at the base village?

You can keep extra luggage in the base village for any particular trek. There are no cloak room charges applicable. Its free of cost

Are there mobile signals available on treks?

If you are going on a trek don’t expect mobile signals. There are few spots on the trails of few treks where you might find a single tower or something but it always depends if that is enough to make a call or not.

How do you manage toilets?

As there are no permanent toilets on the trek, we carry toilet tents which are dry toilets so you need to carry wet tissues/tissue wipes with you.

Yes, The Vishansar team can organize private batches for individual groups, but the cost of the trek may vary according to the number of members in your group. You can talk to our trek coordinator via whatsapp/call to get the customized group rates.

How do I prepare for the trek?

Start running/walking at least 3-4 Kms everyday.

What kind of shoes will I need? Does a sport shoe work?

If it’s a snow trek a good trekking shoe is mandatory. If you buy a new shoe do walk for few days so that it fits you well and doesn’t leave you with blisters while you trek. If it is a summer trek or post monsoon trek a shoe with good grip and ankle support will do.

What food do you provide?

We provide 3 Veg meals and evening Snacks. There will be no non veg served during the trek. Eggs may or may not be served depending on the trek.

Do I need to carry trek equipment?

We will provide sleeping bags, inner liners, sleeping mats, tents. You just need to carry your personal gear. List of personal Gear is in our website under Trek Essentials.

What happens if there is an emergency?

Himalaya Journeys Treks & Expedition prides itself on being prepared for any emergency situation. Our guides are trained in first aid and can deal with most of the basic ailments that occur during a trek. Every camp site has basic first aid and oxygen cylinders But if a serious emergency occurs, we will evacuate you to the base village and nearest hospital but the expenses of that has to be borne by the individual.
